The inner diameter is the defining dimension of honed tube, so verifying it is central to the check. Measuring at more than one point along the length also reveals taper or variation that a single reading would miss.
Straightness is the next dimension to confirm, especially for tube that will be used in long-stroke cylinders where even a small bow is unacceptable. Where possible, run a fingertip check for the preservative film, because a bore that has been wiped dry or has lost its oil is vulnerable to rust even if it looks clean today. If the protective oil is intact and the surface is bright and cross-hatched, the tube is in good condition. If the film is gone, plan to re-preserve the tube before it goes back on the rack for extended storage, so it does not corrode while waiting to be sold.
Beyond the tube itself, inspect how it was protected in transit, because packaging tells you whether the tube is likely to have survived the journey. Confirm that end caps are present and intact, that any moisture-barrier packaging is undamaged, and that there is no sign of water ingress in the bundle. Damaged packaging is a warning to look harder at the tubes inside, because it is exactly the condition under which transit corrosion and mechanical damage occur.
Look also for mechanical damage from handling: dents, bent ends, or impact marks that could indicate rough treatment in transit. A dented tube may be unusable, and a bundle that has clearly been dropped deserves a closer look at every tube. Catching transit damage on arrival lets you claim against the carrier or supplier promptly, whereas discovering it weeks later, after the tube is mixed into stock, makes any claim far harder.
Finally, apply sampling sensibly rather than trying to measure every tube in every shipment. For a trusted supplier with a stable record, a representative sample from each batch, with full checks on anything that looks off, is efficient and effective. For a new supplier, a first shipment, or any batch where the paperwork or packaging raises a flag, inspect more thoroughly. The goal is to catch problems before they reach a customer, using an effort proportional to the risk, so that incoming inspection protects you without becoming a bottleneck.
