Reading the base steel section

The base steel is the foundation of the rod, and the certificate's chemistry and mechanical sections describe it. The grade will usually be named, for example a medium-carbon steel such as CK45 or an alloy grade such as 42CrMo, and the chemical composition will list the key elements. You do not need to be a metallurgist to use this: the grade name tells you the rod's general class, and the alloy content hints at its strength and hardenability.

The mechanical properties section reports strength and sometimes hardness of the base steel, which is what determines how the rod resists bending and load. A higher-strength alloy base suits heavy, long-stroke, or high-load duty, while a standard medium-carbon base suits general service. When a customer describes their application, matching it to the base grade on the certificate is how you steer them to a rod that will last rather than one that will bend.

It is worth being clear with customers about the difference between the base and the surface. The base steel carries the load; the chrome layer resists wear and corrosion. A customer worried about bending needs to look at the base grade and strength, while a customer worried about surface life needs to look at the plating section. Being able to point to the right part of the certificate for each concern marks you out as knowledgeable.

Reading the chrome plating and hardness data

The plating section describes the surface that makes the rod what it is. It typically states the chrome layer thickness, often in the region of 20 or 30 micrometers, and the surface hardness, which for hard chrome is usually reported in the region of 800 to 1000 HV. Thickness tells you how much sacrificial, wear-and-corrosion-resistant material the rod carries, and hardness tells you how well the surface resists scratching and wear.

This is where you match surface specification to environment. A thicker chrome layer suits abrasive or corrosive duty because it gives more material before the base is exposed, while a standard layer is fine for clean indoor service. If the certificate also references a duplex nickel-chrome system, that indicates enhanced corrosion resistance for wet or aggressive environments. Reading these lines lets you sell the right rod for the customer's conditions rather than guessing.

One point to get right, because customers sometimes confuse it, is corrosion testing. Salt spray test results, such as a stated number of hours, are a property of the chrome plating, not of any tube or base steel, because the plating is the corrosion barrier. If a certificate quotes salt spray performance, it belongs to the rod's surface specification. Explaining this correctly to a customer is a small piece of expertise that reinforces their confidence in you.

Reading dimensional data and using the certificate to sell

The dimensional section covers diameter and its tolerance grade, straightness, and sometimes surface finish. Diameter tolerance is usually expressed as a fit grade such as f7 or f8, which tells the customer how the rod will sit in the seal and bushing. Straightness, often given as a maximum deviation over a length, matters most for long-stroke rods where even a small bow ruins performance. These figures let a customer confirm the rod suits their design fit.

Using the certificate to sell is where it all comes together. When a customer describes their cylinder, you can read across the certificate, base grade for load, chrome thickness for environment, diameter and tolerance for fit, and confirm on the spot that the rod matches. That turns a price enquiry into a confident, technically justified sale. Being able to hand over the certificate as proof closes the loop, especially for buyers who need documentation for their own records.

Finally, keep certificates organised and retrievable, ideally filed against each batch on your rack. When a warranty question arises months later, being able to produce the certificate for the exact rod supplied protects both your customer and you, because it shows the rod met its specification. A reseller who can always produce the paperwork becomes the preferred supplier for professional buyers, which is worth far more than any single sale.
