We get this question from customers building their first hydraulic cylinder program almost as often as we get detailed spec sheets from experienced ones: do you actually need honed tube, or will cold drawn tube do the job for less money? The honest answer is that it depends on what the bore surface needs to do once the seal is running against it — and a lot of customers are paying for honing they don't need, while a smaller number are trying to skip honing on an application where it really matters.
Cold drawn tube is pulled through a die to size and straighten it, which gives a reasonably accurate ID and a smooth-looking surface, but the internal surface finish and dimensional consistency aren't tight enough for most dynamic seal applications. Honed tube takes that process further, using abrasive stones to bring the bore to a precise diameter, tight roundness, and a controlled cross-hatch surface finish designed specifically to work with a moving seal.
Cold drawn tube typically holds a wider ID tolerance band than honed tube, and more importantly, it doesn't produce the specific cross-hatch surface texture that lets a dynamic seal retain an oil film as it strokes. The internal surface can look smooth to the eye and still be unsuitable for a piston seal running thousands of cycles, because "smooth" and "correctly finished for a seal" aren't the same thing.
Cold drawn tube is genuinely adequate for static or low-demand applications — structural tubing, non-sealing sleeves, or components where nothing is sliding against the bore under pressure. The moment a seal is dynamically cycling against that bore, cold drawing alone usually isn't enough.
Honing brings the bore to a tighter roundness and straightness tolerance than cold drawing achieves on its own, and it creates the controlled cross-hatch pattern — typically Ra 0.4-0.8μm on standard honed tube — that holds oil film against the seal lip through the stroke. Paying for honing on a tube that isn't going to see seal contact against that surface is money spent on a spec the application doesn't use.
