Why Manufacturing Process Matters

A chrome plated rod is not produced simply by applying chrome to a steel shaft. The finished hydraulic piston rod is the result of several processes, and each stage can influence the final dimensions and surface condition.

Step 1: Selecting the Base Material

The steel base provides the mechanical foundation of the piston rod. Different hydraulic cylinder applications can require different material characteristics.

Available material options include grades such as CK45, SAE1045, 4140, 42CrMo, 40Cr and 20MnV6, as well as stainless steel options including SS430, SS431, 304, 316 and 2205. The appropriate grade depends on the customer's technical requirements and operating environment.

Step 2: Machining the Rod

Before chrome plating, the steel rod needs to be brought to the required basic dimensions and geometry.

The machining stage establishes the foundation for subsequent surface treatment. Diameter, straightness and overall geometry must be controlled because the final chrome plated component still needs to meet the customer's finished specification.

Step 3: Surface Preparation

Surface preparation is important before plating because the chrome layer needs to be applied to a properly prepared steel surface.

The quality of preparation can influence the consistency of the coating and the subsequent finishing process. For this reason, chrome plating should be viewed as one stage in a larger manufacturing sequence rather than the entire production process.

Step 4: Hard Chrome Plating

The prepared steel rod is then processed to create the hard chrome layer on its external surface.

Step 5: Grinding After Plating

This is particularly important for hydraulic piston rods because they must fit correctly with seals and guide components. Grinding therefore contributes to dimensional control as well as surface preparation.

Step 6: Polishing the Working Surface

After grinding, polishing can be used to achieve the required final surface condition.

Step 7: Controlling Diameter Tolerance

The finished hydraulic piston rod should therefore be evaluated according to its final diameter, tolerance, straightness, chrome layer and surface roughness.
