Stocking Chrome Plated Rod: Diameters, Lengths, and Cut-to-Length

The first time a new reseller calls us, the question is almost always the same: "What diameters and lengths should I actually keep on the shelf?" It is the right question, because chrome plated rod ties up more capital per meter than honed tube, and a straight, mirror-finished rod that gets dinged or bowed in your own warehouse is a rod you can no longer sell at full value. Getting the stocking decision right protects both your cash and your reputation.

Chrome plated rod is a resale product with unusually tight expectations. Your downstream customers, whether they are cylinder builders or repair shops, expect the rod to arrive straight, unmarked, and with its hard chrome layer intact. That means stocking is not just about which sizes to buy, but about how you cut, handle, and store them so they leave your dock in the same condition they arrived.

Choosing the diameters that sell

As with honed tube, chrome rod demand clusters around standard piston-rod diameters, because seal and wiper kits are built around them. The recurring metric diameters are 20, 25, 30, 36, 40, 50, 63, 70, and 80 mm, and a reseller who holds the middle of that range covers the majority of everyday cylinder work. The very small and very large diameters are better ordered per project than stocked speculatively.

Diameter tolerance matters as much as the nominal size. Chrome rod is typically supplied to fit grades such as f7 or f8, which define how the rod sits inside the rod bushing and seal. If you stock a mix, it is worth knowing which tolerance your regional customers design around, because a rod at the wrong grade can be technically fine yet unsellable to a builder expecting a different fit. When in doubt, the more common general-purpose grade serves the widest audience.

It also pays to keep the base-material story straight for your customers. Standard hard chrome rod is usually built on a medium-carbon steel such as CK45, while heavier-duty rods may use an alloy base. Knowing the base grade of each rack lets you steer a mining or high-load customer toward the right rod rather than selling them a general-purpose bar that will not last in their service.

Lengths and the economics of cut-to-length

Chrome rod is generally produced and shipped in standard mill lengths, commonly in the region of several meters, and this is where resellers add real value. Very few end users want the full mill length; they want pieces cut to their stroke. Offering a clean cut-to-length service turns a commodity bar into a convenience product and justifies a healthy margin, provided you protect the rod through the cutting process.

The trap is that every cut is a chance to lose value. A rough cut leaves a burr that has to be dressed, and clamping a chromed rod carelessly can bruise the plating. Using soft jaws, supporting the rod along its length, and cutting with the right feed prevents both problems. The goal is that a customer buying a cut length receives a piece indistinguishable in quality from a full bar.

You also need to think about the offcuts. A disciplined cut-to-length operation plans cuts to leave saleable remnants rather than unusable stubs. Keeping a bin of clearly measured short offcuts, and offering them at a discount for short-stroke repairs, recovers value that would otherwise be scrapped. Over a year, that recovered value can be the difference between a profitable rod line and a marginal one.

Protecting straightness in storage and handling

Straightness is the property that a reseller is most likely to destroy without noticing. A chrome rod that arrives within a straightness tolerance can bow if it is stored unsupported, stacked under its own weight, or left leaning in a corner. Because chrome rod is often used at long strokes where straightness is critical, even a small bow can render a rod unusable to the customer.

The remedy is mechanical and simple. Store rods horizontally on continuous supports or in racks with closely spaced arms so there is no long unsupported span, and never stack heavy bundles directly on chromed surfaces. For long rods, more support points are always better, because the rod will slowly take a set under gravity if it is allowed to sag. Vertical storage is acceptable only for shorter lengths that will not buckle under their own weight.

Handling between the rack and the cutting bench is where most surface damage happens. Nylon slings rather than chains, clean benches, and protective wraps on finished cut pieces all preserve the mirror finish that your customers are paying for. A scratched rod is not a cosmetic issue; a gouge through the chrome becomes a corrosion entry point and a seal-wear point in service.

Corrosion protection, certificates, and re-packaging

The hard chrome layer is the rod's primary corrosion defence, and unlike honed tube this plating genuinely does resist rust, which is one reason chrome rod stores relatively well. That said, the layer is thin and micro-cracked by nature, so a film of preservative oil and dry storage remain worthwhile, particularly in humid coastal warehouses. Salt spray performance is a property of the chrome layer, so if your customers ask for corrosion data, it belongs to the rod's plating specification, not to any base tube.

Keeping mill material and plating certificates on file, and being able to hand them over with a cut order, is a genuine selling point to professional buyers. Many end-market customers, especially in regulated sectors, need traceability from the rod back to its steel heat and its chrome specification. A reseller who can produce that paperwork on demand becomes a preferred supplier, while one who cannot is stuck competing on price alone.

Re-packaging is the final touch that protects your margin. When you cut a rod, re-cap the exposed end, re-apply preservative to the cut face, and wrap the finished piece so it reaches the customer clean. The small cost of good consumables is repaid many times over in avoided returns and repeat business, because a reseller known for rods that arrive perfect will always be called first.
